checkpoint # 1 Travelling 24.-25. March 2018
The first Checkpoint event took place over a weekend in March 2018 and its theme was travel. Travel is a fun way to see the world, to step away from everyday life and a way to experience new things. Travel can also be an escape from war, living in exile, hoping for a permanent residence. Travel can include fear of passport control, in a world where all passports are not created equal and not everyone fits into the gendered either-or boxes of passports. Travel can be limited by the boundaries set by society, when even movement in urban spaces depends on assumed physical ability.
Checkpoint #1 dealt with travel by actually travelling to the villages surrounding Loviisa. Art belongs to everywhere there are people, not just urban centers. A convoy of vehicles moved from one location to the next, setting up the art in prominent public places to engage festival visitors and passersby. Music events and artist talks later in the day in Loviisa were also part of the Checkpoint. In the same event, the TransFolk Passport was launched. The passport motivates the audience to get more information about the festival program, since it creates the goal of collecting the stamps from each event.
Artists:
